I recently sat down with Todd McFarlane (creator of Spawn and co-creator of Venom) to discuss the upcoming inclusion of Spawn in Diablo Immortal. I also asked whether he would like to see another solo outing for our hellish anti-hero. After all, he hasn’t had his own game since 2003 with Spawn: Armageddon.
Developed by Point of View and published by Namco, Spawn: Armageddon arrived in 2003 for PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube. The action-adventure game threw Al Simmons into a war between Heaven and Hell, letting players tear through enemies with his signature chains, an axe, firearms, and supernatural powers.
Todd was happy to discuss his feelings regarding the potential next outing for Spawn. “Sure. I have ideas that I’ve been holding off on, but I’ve also been hesitant, and I’ve had people knock on the door asking about it, but I’ve been hesitant to do a full Spawn solo game without the backing of a successful TV show or movie behind it.”
It looks like he is waiting for the movie deal with Blumhouse to work out before he decides to take another plunge into the gaming world. Considering how long fans have been waiting for another Spawn game, I can’t really blame him for wanting to make sure the timing is right. That doesn’t mean he hasn’t been thinking about some possibilities, however.
“…Not a true reinvention; video games are video games, but the technology has expanded. So anything that was in a prior Spawn video game for sure will look different.”
It looks like we might have to wait a bit longer to see Spawn have another outing for himself on a home console. That said, it seems like Todd has some really great ideas up his sleeve.
