Mike Flanagan sees his adaptation of Carrie stretching beyond a single season. In fact, his ideal version would unfold across three.
Hiding within an older interview at the Toronto International Film Festival, Collider’s Perri Nemiroff asked the filmmaker how many seasons he would want to make and why that length suited his vision.
“In my dream scenario, I think it’s three seasons,” Flanagan said. “In my dream scenario, I think Carrie has a wonderful three-step arc. It’s a trilogy, really.”
And if you’ve been following our coverage, that three-season ambition makes a little more sense.
As we reported back in July, Flanagan’s adaptation will introduce other women with telekinetic abilities, expanding the story beyond Carrie White. Beginning with the second episode, each installment opens with another woman discovering her powers in a different place and time.
Flanagan previously told Entertainment Weekly that Carrie belongs to “a sorority of very gifted women and just doesn’t know it.” He connected that approach to the novel’s exploration of telekinesis and the “TK gene.”
Essentially, there are more “Carries” out there. And that opens the door to something considerably bigger than one girl’s horrific prom night.
That doesn’t confirm these other women would lead future seasons, but it certainly gives Flanagan somewhere to go. His three-season vision could explore the larger world around Carrie and what it means for other people to possess that same terrifying power.
For now, three seasons remains his dream scenario, rather than an announcement that Prime Video has ordered the entire trilogy.
