That sequence in Resident Evil where zombies throw themselves off buildings and explode on the street around Austin Abrams? One of those practical effects came dangerously close to hitting him, and Zach Cregger says you can see the near miss in the finished film.
Speaking with IGN, Abrams revisited the incident involving a 150-pound bag of fake blood that landed right beside him while shooting the zombie downpour.
“I mean, I remember running and then being like, ‘Oh, whoa, that was close,’” Abrams recalled.
The actor explained that he stayed on his planned path and, thankfully, didn’t slip. It was afterward, when people started talking to him about what had happened, that the close call really registered.
Cregger then pointed out exactly where to look.
“It’s in the movie. You can see it’s the one to his right, camera left, and it lands, like, right next to his foot,” the director said.
“It was not supposed to be that close, but it looks great in the movie.”
Here’s a clip from the trailer…
The incredible sequence, teased in the trailer, finds Abrams surrounded by buildings crawling with zombies. They start jumping off to get to him, smashing into the ground as he runs through the street. Those bloody impacts involved heavy bags of fake blood dropped around the actor, giving the scene a physical mess for him to navigate.
Knowing that one landed closer than intended makes an already frantic scene even more unnerving. The zombies are supposed to be trying to kill the guy. The effects equipment obviously isn’t.
