After a theatrical run fueled by all those fun, weird viral clips, Buddy is finally headed home. And we’re getting everything from Digital to VHS for the smash-hit indie horror movie.
Dread Central learned today that Buddy arrives on Digital October 13, followed by DVD and Blu-ray on December 8. VHS collectors can get in on the fun, too: preorders open November 24 through Witter Entertainment.
We don’t have the full home-video details just yet, including special features or a look at the packaging, but we do have the dates. A killer unicorn from a twisted children’s television show getting his own videotape feels pretty appropriate.
And Buddy has had a hell of a run. The film added $208,948 this past weekend, bringing its domestic total to $26.85 million. INSANE for an original, R-rated indie horror movie about an orange unicorn who really doesn’t like being told no.
We’ve been following this thing from Sundance through its increasingly bizarre theatrical rollout, which even included a sing-along version that opened this past weekend.
In his Sundance review, Josh Korngut gave Buddy 3.5 stars, calling it “outrageous, mean, and regularly funny.” He had reservations about its detours outside the children’s television world, but celebrated the film’s creativity and willingness to get weird.
Directed by Casper Kelly (Adult Swim Yule Log), who co-wrote the screenplay with Jamie King, Buddy follows a group of children inside the colorful television show It’s Buddy!. Their days revolve around singing, dancing, and helping their cheerful host spread happiness. When one child refuses to play along, that seemingly perfect world starts falling apart.
