Getting Doug Bradley back as Pinhead for Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival meant more than bringing back the man behind that incredible voice. It also meant having someone who could help the developers figure out how the hell to recreate it.
Bradley played Pinhead across the first eight Hellraiser films, from the 1987 original through Hellraiser: Hellworld in 2005. Stephan Smith Collins subsequently took over in Hellraiser: Revelations, followed by Paul T. Taylor in Hellraiser: Judgment and Jamie Clayton in David Bruckner’s 2022 reimagining. That makes Revival a return more than two decades after Bradley’s last film appearance as Pinhead, although fans also heard him voice the character in Dead by Daylight in 2022.
In a new BAFTA video, game director Emil Esov, narrative director Antony de Fault, and Saber Interactive chief creative officer Tim Willits discuss Bradley’s return and a surprisingly useful piece of Hellraiser history that came with him.
According to the team, Bradley worried about slipping back into the character after so many years away from the films. Once he got going, though, it was like riding a bike. He also brought insights into Pinhead that only the man who played him could offer.
That included helping reconstruct the effects applied to his voice.
“They never documented any of that process in the ’80s,” the team explains. “So for each movie, the new sound team was trying to figure out how the hell to make him sound like he was supposed to sound.”
Their solution? Ask Doug.
Bradley shared what he remembered about the vocal effects, giving the game’s sound team a starting point. As the developers acknowledge in the conversation, this history comes from Bradley himself. Apparently, recreating Pinhead’s voice has been a recurring puzzle of its own.
