Mike Flanagan set out to make The Exorcist: Martyrs the scariest movie of his career. Asked at Blumhouse’s New York […]

“This movie is unlike any other Exorcist movie that’s ever been made,” he said, explaining that the team wanted “to take this franchise in a completely different direction.”
“And one of the things that we all kind of agreed on going in was that it had to be scary. It had to just be goddamn scary, like to your bones scary.”

Interestingly, Flanagan specifically singled out The Exorcist III as a film they discussed while developing Martyrs, calling it “one of the most underrated, underappreciated films in the franchise.”
That’s exactly the connection I was making when the trailer dropped. Its procedural horror and serial-killer mystery feel like a promising way back into this world, with shades of Se7en and The Silence of the Lambs. Hearing that The Exorcist III was part of those conversations makes me even more curious to see how it all comes together.
Flanagan acknowledged the pressure of following William Friedkin’s original, describing the opportunity as both exciting and intimidating.
“It’s not just Friedkin’s masterpiece that we’re kind of stepping into the shadow of,” he explained. “It’s an entire franchise, and an entire franchise that has struck out in different directions every time they’ve come up to the bat.”
That willingness to go somewhere else is what I like about everything we’ve seen so far. The original Exorcist is a masterpiece. Give us another story worth telling in that world.
The Exorcist: Martyrs stars Scarlett Johansson (Under the Skin) as an NYPD homicide detective whose case leads to the execution of serial killer Father Sunday, played by John Leguizamo (Land of the Dead). When the execution goes wrong, priests played by Chiwetel Ejiofor (Doctor Strange) and Laurence Fishburne (Event Horizon) become involved.
Universal Pictures releases the film in theaters March 12, 2027.
