Brian Duffield has another big genre release arriving with Whalefall this week, but an Alien movie apparently isn’t on his schedule.
Speaking with Collider at New York Comic Con, the filmmaker addressed rumors connecting him to a new entry in the franchise.
“I know how the rumor started, but it’s not something I’m currently working on,” Duffield said, adding, “I’m not directing Alien.”
We covered the rumor back in June, when it was reported that Duffield was allegedly writing a new Alien film for 20th Century Studios. Whether he would also direct was unclear, and the project was never officially announced.
It was an intriguing possibility. Duffield has become a hot commodity in the genre, writing and directing Spontaneous and No One Will Save You, alongside screenwriting credits on The Babysitter, Underwater, and Love and Monsters. That’s a pretty great collection of movies to have your name on.
He’s already delivered some excellent extraterrestrial horror, too. In our 4.5/5 review of No One Will Save You, Mary Beth McAndrews called him “a commanding voice in the horror genre.”
For now, his next nightmare takes place inside a whale. Whalefall opens October 16, with Austin Abrams (Weapons, Resident Evil) playing a diver swallowed by a sperm whale while searching for his father’s remains. We shared a new clip yesterday that gives you a pretty terrifying look at how he gets there.
