“All of the kills were practical. They all came out gloriously practical, and then occasionally, we would put some slight VFX over it if we needed to enhance it,” he told TVLine.
“But they were all practical. The blood bag is entirely practical. The slicing of the face was entirely practical, although we enhanced it by maybe two or three percent, a little vis effects.”
Kane credited practical effects makeup supervisor Dave Presto and special effects supervisor Johann Kunz, describing the kills as “very time-consuming” and “very, very messy and sort of glorious to behold on set in person.”
We’ve had our disagreements about the series here at Dread Central. Kurland gave it 3.5 out of 5 in his review, calling it “an extremely satisfying step forward for the Friday the 13th franchise.” My feelings about the new mythology are considerably less enthusiastic.
I’m still not buying the whole “Cockroach Jason” explanation. Call it radiation resistance, clarify that it isn’t gene splicing, argue over the terminology… my problem remains the decision to explain Jason through experiments in the first place. To me, that still pushes him toward an Eleven-style origin, and I don’t think any of it was necessary. Fans can defend it all they want. This writer rejects it.
Outside of that, though, there’s a pretty good show here, with some great performances and awesome kills. Linda Cardellini is fantastic as Pamela Voorhees, and the first season does set the stage for a follow-up that can really dive into the gore. I don’t have to like the explanation for Jason to want to see what happens when they finally let him loose.
All eight episodes of Crystal Lake are streaming on Peacock.
