American Psycho might be an obvious influence on Victorian Psycho, but Maika Monroe (Longlegs, It Follows) had another screen psychopath in mind, too.
Bleecker Street has released a featurette for the forthcoming horror film, which opens in theaters November 13. Alongside interviews with the cast and filmmakers, it boasts plenty of new footage of Monroe’s governess trying to appear sane while concealing a completely insane mind.
“A huge influence was Jack Nicholson in The Shining and American Psycho,” Monroe explains.
Director Zachary Wigon (Sanctuary) expands on the latter comparison: “Like American Psycho, you have a descent into madness, an antihero at the center.”
Monroe plays Winifred Notty, an eccentric governess hired to care for two children at a remote English manor. She has some particularly nasty impulses to keep under control, and as members of the household staff begin disappearing, her employers start questioning their new hire.

As I wrote when we shared the first clip, I quite enjoyed this one. It’s quick, witty, funny, and gory, with Monroe pretty much Looney Tunes right out of the gate. She brings the madness into the house with her, and watching her try to pass as a perfectly suitable employee is part of the fun.
Josh Korngut was similarly impressed in his , giving the film and calling Monroe’s turn “a career-best performance.” He described the movie as “a vicious, funny, beautifully made swing.”
